• 10.4 lakh DTH subscribers added in Oct-Dec 18 quarter in India

    BENGALURU: In calendar year 2018 (1 January 2018 to 31 December 2018), India’s private direct to home (DTH) service providers added 29.3 lakh net subscribers of which 10.4 lakh additions were made in the last quarter of the calendar year (Oct-Dec 2018, Q3 2019, period under review).
  • Amazon to launch satellites for broadband internet

    MUMBAI: An attempt by the e-commerce giant, Amazon to provide internet access is being made through its new initiative ‘Project Kuiper’ to build a network of over 3000 satellites, according to multiple filings made with the International Telecommunication Union last month.

    Amazon said in a statement that the long-term project will cater to people globally who lack basic access to broadband internet, the report mentioned.

  • Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio eye stake in ZEEL: Report

    MUMBAI:  After it came to light that Sony Corporation had withdrawn its bid for a stake in Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), Indian telecom giants Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are likely to bid for the same, according to a report by press agency IANS.

    While Bharti Airtel has moved ahead and is likely to initiate a formal proposal, Reliance Jio is still considering the move.

    MUMBAI: Amid controversy surrounding NaMo TV, a channel exclusively featuring content related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, sources within India’s top DTH operators have told Indiantelevision.com that it isn’t, in fact, a standard television channel. While a Tata Sky source said NaMo TV is a “special service with content provided by the BJP” a Dish TV spokesperson described it as an “ad sales-related service”.

    MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) is amending the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990 to pave the way for direct appointment of director generals (DGs) and other officers/employees for Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR).

    As per section 9 of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990 the appointment of officers and other employees is to be made in consultation with the recruitment board of Prasar Bharati to be established under section 10 of the Act.

  • NBSA warns five news channels for violating NBA’s code of conduct

    MUMBAI: The News Broadcasting Standard Authority (NBSA) has warned five news broadcasters for violating the News Broadcasters Association’s (NBA) code of conduct. The warnings were issued after receiving complaints against ABP News, Republic TV, India Today, Zee News and Tez.

    The Electronic Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC) had filed two complaints against ABP News related to their programme ‘Viral Sach’ besides India Today and Tez. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had filed complaint against Zee News for its three programmes ‘Taal Thok Ke’, ‘News Special’ and ‘DNA’. Sharad Shah had filed complaint against Republic TV for calling Congress leader a member of Pakistan’s ISI.
