• OTT players see interactive content as the future of fiction programming

    MUMBAI: Over the top (OTT) platforms have thrown the doors open to experimenting with new content formats. Interactivity around fiction programming is proving itself as the new area of interest for OTT platforms. Following the lead of Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,other players including prominent Indian streaming platforms, intend to take a dip. Despite higher production cost and technological complexities, players are not shying away from the format due to the high consumer engagement.

In their new roles, both Pathak and D’silva will report to Romil Ramgarhia, COO of BARC India.

  • TRAI directs 6 DPOs to adhere to NTO rules within 5 days

    TRAI on Tuesday directed six DPOs namely GTPL Hathway, Siti Network, Hathway Digital, Fastway Transmissions, Den Networks, and IndusInd Media and Communications limited to adhere to the regulations of the New Tariff Order for the broadcast and cable services sectors within five days. The directive mentions that TRAI has observed many MSOs violating the rules. Issues ranging from DPOs forcing channel packs on customers, to them not providing receipts have been listed in the document.
  • Roposo targets 10 million daily active users by 2019-end

    MUMBAI: Two years ago user-generated video content platform Roposo repositioned itself as a digital TV platform. Earlier its focus was on fashion but after the repositioning, it focussed on several other genres that users are interested in. This year the goal is to reach 10 million daily active users by 2019-end. Roposo had launched back in 2014 and had focussed on women in its early days before then pivoting to fashion.
  • Netflix hopes to broaden appeal among Indian consumers with lower pricing model

    MUMBAI: With an aim to expand its subscriber base in India, the video streaming giant Netflix is experimenting with the low-cost mobile-only subscription at Rs 250 per month with select users. This is half of the Rs 500 that the streaming platform charges for its base subscription pack.

    The Internet TV network is experimenting with lower pricing models in India in order to broaden its appeal among Indian consumers.

    Speaking at Q1 earnings conference call, Netflix chief product officer Greg Peters noted that mobile-only plan is a great example of something that the company is trying out.

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been making headlines for its 'New Tariff Order' (NTO) which marks the beginning of a new regulatory framework in the broadcast space. The new regime enables consumers to subscribe and pay only for channels they choose. So far, the new framework has fetched mixed feedback. Consumers and local cable operators (LCO) criticised the NTO while broadcasters and Multi Service Operators (MSO) welcomed it.
  • Den reports lower broadband, placement and activation income for FY2019

    BENGALURU: After the roll in of the Jio juggernaut, things have never been the same for the Indian broadband internet services industry.  It’s déjà vu - Den Networks Ltd (Den) reported lower subscription numbers for its fixed broadband business for the quarter and year ended 31 March 2019 (Q4 2019, FY 2019, quarter and year or fiscal under consideration) as compared to the previous years. Placement income also fell in FY 2019 as it had in FY 2018 when compared to the previous years. Den had seen an increase in its Activation Income in fiscal 2018 as compared to FY 2017, however, placement income dropped in 2019 as compared to FY 2018.
