    MUMBAI: The 15 large multi system operators (MSOs) control close to 78% share of the cable TV market while the other smaller MSOs have just 22% share of the market. This information was provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its white paper on benefits of ‘New Framework’ for small MSOs.

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) believes that by "May-end" it will finalise its views on whether Over-The-Top (OTT) services should be brought under the regulatory regime. A PTI report quotes TRAI saying it has kept an "open mind". The report quotes the TRAI chairman as saying that the regulator studied global best practices like that of the European Electronic Communications Code and will keep those in mind while formulating its opinion.

  • New tariff order: TRAI hints at action against DPOs flouting norms

    MUMBAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has warned all cable TV and DTH players that those found to be flouting its new tariff order rules will be taken to task. As per a report by PTI, TRAI will also undertake an audit of the subscriber management and IT systems of operators that don’t abide by its rules.Speaking to PTI, TRAI chairman RS Sharma said, "We have received complaints about inconvenience to customers. These complaints relate to software and systems put in place by distributors not enabling true choice for consumers, which is the aim of the whole framework. If choice of channel is restricted then basic intention seems to be to push packs and bouquets and push your own agenda.

  • TRAI extends deadline for comments on DAS audit manual consultation paper

    MUMBAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the date for receiving comments and counter comments on its consultation paper “The telecommunication (broadcast and cable) services digital addressable systems audit manual” to 29 April and 6 May respectively.

    The earlier dates were fixed as 22 April for comments and 29 April for comments. The stakeholders sought time from the regulator. TRAI has said that there will be no further extensions beyond these dates.
