    MUMBAI: Producing original shows on issues of contemporary local significance like surgical strikes, national elections, Ganesha festivals, marvels and mysteries of India; that’s how History TV 18 aims to stand out in the niche segment of infotainment channels in India. “Very consciously we are going towards the direction of original local content because that is what will make our brand stand out in India,” says A+E Networks | TV18 MD and Network18 CEO Avinash Kaul in an interaction with Indiantelevision.com. He also spoke on the need for creating original content in infotainment space, challenges faced by the genre, impact of NTO on niche genres, economic slowdown, channel’s growth trajectory and plans for 2020.
  • BARC week 46: Uptick in English news channel viewership

    BENGALURU: Recent events in the country resulted in the increase in viewership of news channels. Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly data for Top 5 English news channels in week 46 of 2019 (Saturday, 9 November 2019 to Friday, 15 November 2019, week or period under review) shows a sharp increase in ratings as compared to the previous week. Among the major news events that took place during the week under review was the Supreme Court’s verdict for the Ayodhya dispute.
  • BARC week 46: Star Plus retains leading position in urban market

    MUMBAI: For the past few weeks Sony Pictures Network's GEC channel Sony Entertainment Television and Sony SAB were holding the leading position but in week 46 of BARC India rating, Star Plus has jumped to the leading position. Sony SAB has slipped to second position this week, the channel was seen at first position last week. Even Sony Entertainment Television has slipped down to the fourth position. Last week the channel was observed in the third position. Zee TV, which was seen in the third position last week, has slipped to the fifth position.
  • BARC week 46: Zee Bangla Cinema replaces Colors Bangla

    MUMBAI: In week 46 of BARC India ratings, Zee Bagla Cinema has replaced Colors Bangla at fifth position and in Gujarati space, VTV News has replaced Sandesh News at fifth position. Apart from these, slight changes in the pecking of channels in the Malayalam, Gujarati and Marathi spaces were observed. Whereas the pecking order of the channels in  Bhojpuri, Kannada Tamil and Telugu space remained unchanged.

  • Star India reports 30% jump in total revenue for FY19

    Star India Private Limited has released its financials for FY 2018-19 and according to financial data accessed by business intelligence platform Tofler, the broadcaster has reported a 30 per cent jump in its total revenues for the financial year 2018-19 at Rs 11,956 crore, compared to the last financial year. The revenues for FY18 stood at Rs 91,990 crore.

    The company has further reported a net loss of Rs 636 crore during the same fiscal and its total expenses stood at Rs 12,930 crore.

    BBC Global News will be launching two new premium collections on BBC.com in 2020

    BBC Global News, which owns and operates BBC World News and BBC.com, hosted its first-ever Upfront events in Delhi on Tuesday and the Mumbai event will be held on Thursday.

    The theme of the events is ‘The Power of an Authentic Voice’ and will bring together movers and shakers from India’s media and advertising industries, and see BBC Global News showcasing a range of its forthcoming content, partnerships and initiatives.

  • Will Disney+ up the content game among OTT platforms in India?

    Disney’s announcement of entering into the video-on-demand streaming service with Disney+ has not only triggered concerns among global players but in India as well. Although there is no official communication on how Disney will roll out it's streaming services in India, reportedly the service will be launched via Hotstar, which is now owned by The Walt Disney Company.

    Recently, Disney+ was launched in the US market at a subscription priced at $6.99 per month. According to media reports, the platform is planning to launch its service in India in May next year. Currently, there are over 32 OTT platforms in India and the recent launch of Disney+ is expected to up the game for others in terms of content and quality. The new on-demand streaming service will bring iconic TV shows and movies from Disney's other subsidiaries including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and others.
