• Star India's FY19 losses widen due to IPL

    MUMBAI: Star India’s bet with the Indian Premier League (IPL) seems to have made a dent in its pocket for the financial year ending March 2019. The company reported a loss of Rs 1216.13 crore as against a profit of Rs 287.69 crore a year ago, according to a report by Economic Times. Star India booked IPL expenses of Rs 4000 crore. Even though the company’s revenue increased by 35 per cent, it was hit by the IPL expenses. Economic Times also quoted a Tofler report which indicated that Star India’s total revenue from operations was Rs 12,314 crore in FY19 which was Rs 9149 crore a year ago. Ad revenue was up by 49 per cent while distribution revenue saw a hike of 9 per cent.
  • Hindi news genre becomes top gainer in Chrome DM week 47

    MUMBAI: Hindi news genre has become the top gainer in week 47 of Chrome Data Analytics and Media data. The genre grew by 1.05 per cent. In this genre, ABP News channel gained the highest OTS with 99.3 per cent in HSM excluding <1 lakh market.

    OTS is the actual census-based percentage connectivity of a channel spread across 81 million homes, as reported by Chrome DM, across analogue cable, digital cable, and DTH.

  • BlackRock stake in Zeel crosses 5% mark

    MUMBAI: Despite the debt crisis of the promoter group of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel), foreign fund investors aren’t shying away from betting their money. New York-based BlackRock has increased its stake in the Indian media conglomerate. Before 21 November, BlackRock held 4.77 per cent stake which has now crossed 5 per cent.

    Before the acquisition, BlackRock had 45,837,578 shares carrying voting rights in the company. Now, it has increased by 0.24 per cent in an on-market transaction reaching 48,191,811 shares. Post the acquisition, the total diluted share of BlackRock in Zeel stands at 960,483,235, as per a listing in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

  • TV News witnesses 2.5x surge in viewership on Ayodhya Verdict day

    The day the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute, TV news channels witnessed more than a 2.5x surge in their viewership. While Hindi news TV grew 2.5x, English news TV registered a 2.7x growth on November 9, 2019, when the apex court pronounced the historic judgement.

    The long-awaited verdict also got the country glued to their television sets as the Hindi TV news genre saw a major uptick in viewership with most channels seeing an increase between 100% and 300%.

  • Times Internet posts 9.4% jump in total revenue in FY19

    The digital arm of Times Group - Times Internet - has posted an increase of 9.4 per cent in its total revenue for the year ended March 31, 2019. The company has recorded a total revenue of Rs 1526.51 crore as compared to Rs 1394.42 crore in FY2018.

    BENGALURU: Three channels from the Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel), two channels each from Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) and Star India, and one channel each from Enterr 10 Television, the Sun Tv Network and Viacom18 were present in Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list of Top 10 Channels Across Genres on All Platforms in week 46 of 2019. Zeel earlier had three channels in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres on all platforms in week 42 of 2019. Zeel’s Kannada GEC Zee Kannada joined the acquired Hindi GEC and free to air (FTA) Big Magic and flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV in week 46 of 2019 (Saturday, 9th November 2019 to Friday, 15th November 2019, week or period under review).Over the past few weeks, only one channel from the Zeel stable was present in BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Channels Across Genres on All Platforms.

    Seven of the channels were Hindi GECs, and there was one channel each from the Kannada, Tamil and Telugu genres in the list in week 46 of 2019. All the channels (including the non-Hindi ones) in BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Channels on All Platforms Across Genres were general entertainment channels or GECs. Eight of the channels in the list were pay TV, two, both Hindi GECs, were FTA.
