• Eight of top ten across genres channels from 4 major networks

    BENGALURU: Week 48 of 2019(Saturday, 23 November 2019 to Friday, 29 November 2019, week or period under review) saw two each channels from four major networks amongst Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list of Top 10 Channels Across Genres on All Platforms. Star India, Viacom18 and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) had one channel from the Hindi GEC genre and one channel each from three South Indian genre language in BARC’s across genres on all platforms weekly list for the week under review. Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) had two channels from the Hindi GEC genre during the period.

The auto awards jury comprises Ronojoy Mukerji, Ex-SIAM Dy Director and auto journalist; Jatin Ahuja, Founder and MD, Big Boy Toyz; Tutu Dhawan, industry veteran; Maral Yazarloo-Pattrick, record holder biker and businesswoman and Kunal Kelkar, automotive photographer, Founder, The Autofocus.

  • Maharashtra Govt formation led to higher viewership for Marathi news channels

    On the back of Maharashtra government formation Marathi and Hindi news genre witnessed a tremendous growth in viewership, as per the BARC India data of Maharashtra and Goa region.

    The Marathi news genre witnessed 57% growth in viewership. The genre saw 37 million unique viewers in week 48 as compared to the previous four weeks.

    Similarly, Hindi news genre witnessed 34million unique viewers in the same week and also saw 24% growth in viewership.

  • MIB adds DD Yadagiri in must-carry list for broadcasters

    MUMBAI: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has mandated all distribution platform operators to carry DD Yadagiri as a must-carry Doordarshan channel.

    In its recent notification, MIB stated that DD Yadagiri is the 27th mandatory Doordarshan channel and according to section 8 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, all channels notified by the Central Government by notification in the Official Gazette have to be mandatorily carried by the cable operators.

    This year in May, MIB included DD Arun Prabha in the mandatory DD channels list.

    DD Yadagiri is a state-owned Telugu language television channel operated by India's national broadcaster Doordarshan. It is one of the 11 Indian regional language channels operated by Doordarshan and is telecast from Doordarshan Kendra Hyderabad, Telangana and caters to the state of Telangana.

  • Hathway is second-biggest investment of Reliance in digital ecosystem: Ind-Ra

    MUMBAI: India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has affirmed Hathway Cable & Datacom Ltd’s (HCDL) Long-Term Issuer Rating at ‘IND AAA’. The Outlook is Stable.

    Hathway is of strategic importance to Reliance Industries Ltd. In H2 FY19, RIL, through group entities, acquired a 72% stake in Hathway for a total consideration of Rs 41.2 billion. The acquisition is part of RIL’s core strategy to increase the share of its consumer business in overall profitability closer to the share of its energy business over the next decade.

    Ind-Ra noted that Hathway gives RJio direct access to 6 million digital cable households, which represents about 12% of RIL’s targeted FTTH client base of 50.0 million. Through Hathway, RJio can address the last-mile connectivity challenge for its FTTH network and explore additional revenue streams beyond cable TV subscriptions.

  • BARC week 48: No changes in pecking order of top five Hindi GECs

     MUMBAI: In week 48 of BARC India ratings, Star Ustav has jumped to eight position from tenth last week in the urban market. The channel has also moved one step up on the pay platform from ninth position to eight. On pay platform Sony Pal has replaced &TV at tenth position. Apart from this the pecking order of the top five hindi remained unchanged. 
     
    Star Plus,  Sony SAB, Colors, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee TV,   Dangal, Star Bharat, Star Utsav, &TV and Big Magic were seen at first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth position in the urban market.
     
  • GTPL Hathway to deploy Rs 160-165 cr Capex in FY20

    MUMBAI: Cable TV and broadband service provider GTPL Hathway plans to deploy Rs 160-165 crore Capex in FY20. In the first two quarters of the current fiscal, the company’s Capex deployment is around Rs 86 crore.

    “Yearly guidance we are keeping it same as Rs.160-165 crores Capex for the whole year. We have already utilized around Rs.86 crores out of that and 50% will be utilized in next two quarters,” GTPL Hathway business head – video and chief strategy officer Piyush Pankaj told analysts during Q2 earnings conference call.

    GTPL Hathway MD Anirudhsinh Jadeja said that the Capex in Q2 was around Rs. 55 crore which included Rs 40 crore on cable TV and Rs 15 crore on broadband. In Q1, the Capex stood at Rs 31 crore including Rs. 15 crore on broadband and Rs 16 crore on cable TV.

    Jadeja also stated that the company collects only 25% of the amount collected by local cable operators (LCOs) from the customers. The company plans to increase its share of the revenue gradually. In Q2, the ARPU increased to Rs. 123-124 from Rs. 121.

  • English movies genre becomes top gainer in Chrome DM week 48

    MUMBAI: English movies genre has become the top gainer in week 48 of Chrome Data Analytics and Media data. The genre grew by 0.69 per cent. In this genre, Warner Brothers channel gained the highest OTS with 46.2 per cent in 6 metro market.

    OTS is the actual census-based percentage connectivity of a channel spread across 81 million homes, as reported by Chrome DM, across analogue cable, digital cable, and DTH.

  • Pen India plans to launch six more TV channels in 2020

    MUMBAI: Jayantilal Gada’s film production and distribution company Pen India, which currently owns and operates two channels, is planning to launch six more channels in 2020.

    One of the six channels to be launched include MTunes+. The company also plans to launch channels under the name iLove, DreamTV, and BT News.

    Recently, Pen Music, a subsidiary of Pen India, had received three TV channel licences from the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB). The three non-news, uplinking & downlinking licences in the Hindi language are Issaq, Play My Movie, and Play My Song. All three licences were granted on 21st October 2019.

    Presently, Pen India has two channels on-air namely B-Flix and iLove. The film studio has revamped its Hindi music channel WoW Music as iLove. The channel will now cater to an additional 30 million households across India due to its availability on DD Free Dish.

    The company’s first satellite TV channel Wow Movies and Music launched in July 2018. The channel features the best movies and songs from Hindi cinema. The channel’s tagline is ‘Dil Boley Wow’.

  • Hyderabad police registers case against seven people for tampering TV viewership

    MUMBAI: The Hyderabad police has booked seven people for allegedly tampering TV viewership for two Telugu news channels in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The police filed a charge sheet before a court on Monday.

    The cases were registered following a complaint lodged by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC)’s vigilance wing with the Marredpally police. This is the latest incident in which BARC has taken action. Earlier, BARC had taken action against viewership tampering in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam.

    The police has registered cases under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC, read with 34. While the seven accused were detained a few months ago, this is the first time that a charge sheet has been filed. The accused tried to influence viewers in BARC households where meters were installed.

    In July, BARC India had upped its vigilance drive with stronger counter-measures to protect the system from Panel Tampering and other unfair practices with respect to manipulation of television viewership.
